His first novel, Palimpsests (with Glenn Harcourt), appeared as one of Terry Carr’s Ace Specials and his other books include Radiance, The Amount to Carry, Kafka Americana (with Jonathan Lethem), and Gypsy. Carter has been a finalist for Hugo, Nebula, and Campbell awards. He is also active as a musician and composer; his work is available from Frog Peak Music. He currently lives in northern California.
